Strong content, uneven pacing

A worthwhile addition to my shelf, with realistic expectations.

I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. The index and cross-references are surprisingly good, which matters for a book I will come back to. The book rewards careful reading. Skimming it would be a mistake. Good value for the price and worth the time it takes to work through properly.

A worthwhile read

Almost excellent. A second edition could easily push it to five stars.

I bought this on a whim after seeing it mentioned in a forum thread, and I am glad I did. Some terminology is introduced without much ceremony; I had to look a few things up along the way. The balance between theory and practice is well judged; neither side dominates. A good addition to a technical library, as long as you know what you are buying.

Mixed feelings

Good in places. I would borrow it before buying if you can.

I have been working with game development for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. The code samples assume a particular environment, which took a bit of fiddling to get running properly. The author is unusually honest about where the simplifications break down, which I appreciated. Useful as a reference, less so as a straight read from cover to cover.
